I’m writing in need of financial help with rent and living expenses. Recently I’ve taken a risk in departing Australia to follow my dreams in humanitarianism. Leaving behind my immediate family, a comfortable lifestyle, and a depressing minimum wage 9 to 5 job; I had a vision for change in my home country of Solomon Islands. Rated as one of the poorest nations in the pacific region, I felt that with my privilege of higher education and knowledge to make a positive impact; this was my true calling.

I was born in the Solomon Islands and when my mother was able to study abroad for her master’s degree in agriculture year 2005, my dad, sister, and I followed not long after. I was only 9 years old when we first moved to Australia and only visited Solomon Islands during funerals of relatives or briefly every few years between.

I’m 28years old now and recently after 11 years my father booked a trip back to see the Pacific Games, which was historically held in the country for the first time. During the visit, my heart was broken. It didn’t make sense that even after decades the country didn’t change, stagnant or maybe even worse than I remembered. I didn’t want to leave, I felt that it was wrong that I could live a great life in Australia while my people were suffering at the hands of greedy powers. My father forced that I had to follow him back to Australia after our visit and I had no say as he sponsored the whole trip, I had to accept.

Since back, 3 months of slaving at my 9 to 5 job, underpaid and overworked, all I could think of was the people of Solomon Islands.

So, as soon as I was able to buy a plane ticket and organise a suitable house to rent, I took the leap of faith. With only less than $200.00AUD in the bank when I left, I knew that I wasn’t going to achieve my goals without at least asking for in kind financial support as I work towards solidifying my foundations within the country.

It’s been nearly 3 weeks now since arriving and I’ve been diligently following the action steps I planned prior to my decision of leaving Australia. Applying for work with humanitarian organisations, hospitality restaurants, and media companies, it’s now just the waiting game for interviews to come through.

As an alumnus for the Griffith Film School, I studied a Bachelor of Film and Media Production; with this as my strength, it’s the education and health sectors of this country that I aim to have a positive impact in. I’ve also hit the streets conducting ‘man on the street’ interviews to engage with the indigenous people to gain further insights into the circumstances and struggles they’re enduring. With the purpose of posting social media content of my experiences and spread awareness about the inherent corruption rampant within Solomon Islands.

Unfortunately, due to costs of general living, I’ve now reached my financial limits. Therefore, I’m writing this seeking anyone that is kindly able to help financially.

My rent is around $1000.00AUD per month and living expenses is around $500.00AUD. I’m not asking for much, but I’m hoping to cover at least one more month worth of rent and cover living expenses such as transport, food, electricity. Additionally, the lack of cheap or good internet infrastructures has consequently turned to renting a Starlink device as well @ $180.00AUD per month to have good internet access especially for when in remote villages that use a generator.

I know I’ll be able to get back on my feet within the coming months with a stable job and further developing networks for the grassroots projects I have envisioned for a revolution within the country of Solomon Islands.

The total asking amount is around $2000.00AUD to $3000.00AUD to cover the coming months rent and expenses. Although at this point, any amount of financial donation will help greatly. You will not only be helping a budding humanitarian but a nation that is in desperate need for their voices heard, and spirits reignited. I thank you in advance for the financial support and if there is any way that I can repay for the support please do let me know.
